How to Apply Creams to a Baby with Eczema

Babies with Eczema have very dry, irritated skin so extra care needs to be taken when applying emollient creams, prescribed eczema treatments or even bathing your baby.

A baby’s skin can become further irritated or develop serious skin infections requiring antibiotics if extra care is not taken during baby skin care treatments.

To reduce the chance of further skin irritation and infection follow these tips when applying your baby skin care product or prescribed eczema treatment.

If you notice your baby’s eczema has worsened or the skin is broken, bleeding or weeping it is extremely important to see your doctor.

Tips for Cream Applications

  1. Always wash your hands before bathing your baby, applying emollients, massage or applying prescribed eczema treatments.
  2. Always patch test your product if being used for the first time. Click this link to go to the patch testing page
  3. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using products
  4. When bathing your baby use a very soft clean cloth and wash skin in downward strokes from shoulder to wrist, hip to ankle. Do not rub skin. This is the direction of hair growth, by going against the hair growth it will further irritate the skin and this were infections can develop.
  5. Always rinse your baby with clean warm water to remove any excess bath product.
  6. Pat your baby’s skin dry with a clean soft towel and apply your emollient cream within 2-5 minutes to help lock in the moisture from the water. Again using downward strokes and no rubbing.
  7. If your baby has a prescribed eczema treatment wait at least 30 minutes before applying this as the emollient will dilute the eczema treatment. Again use downward strokes and no rubbing.
  8. If you choose to massage on your baby’s emollient, again always use downward strokes and no rubbing.
  9. To help decrease the risk of infection, never share your baby’s skin care products with others.
  10.  As itching tends to be worse at night for a baby with eczema always apply more emollient just before going to bed. (This may seem excessive especially if you have only bathed your baby at 5.00pm and they go to bed at 7.30pm but frequent moisturising really is the key in managing and reducing the number and severity of eczema outbreaks).
